Macau Is China? Las Vegas

Without a doubt, Las Vegas is the gambling capital of the US, raking in millions of dollars a year on gambling activities alone. But across the globe there is another big gambling city shining in the spotlight, Macau, China. Interestingly, Macau is the only place in China where gambling is legal.

Macau is a former Portuguese colony that is now China’s equivalent to Las Vegas. Personal wealth in this area is great, and residents eagerly want to spend that wealth. Steve Wynn, CEO of Wynn Resorts, realized this would be the perfect spot for a casino and opened Wynn Macau in September 2006. Wynn has experience in the industry, as the owner of the super popular The Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Wynn Resorts reported second-quarter 2011 earnings that exceeded expectations. In fact, Wynn Macau is doing so well, there are plans for expansion. The company reported 39% increased revenues in the past year, which exceeds Las Vegas’s revenue increase of only 23%. Executives expect even more of China’s residents to come to Wynn Macau to relax and gamble, providing a potential goldmine for investors.

For those interested in investing in Wynn Macau, instead of purchasing stock outright, there are two options:

  1. Buy stock in the January $165 call before it expires in 2013, now set at $29.20 a share.
  2. Sell puts. The August $150 put traded at $2.28. Investors get to keep the money when the put is sold, if the stock stays above the strike price. It if falls below the strike price, the investor must buy the shares.

Although Wynn Macau isn’t the only casino in the area, it has a solid grip on the high rollers and they know what customers want.

According to myaddiction.com, “85% of US adults have gambled at least once in their lifetime.” Although many of that number never return to gambling, an estimated 2% of gamblers are teens, and “10% of Nevada’s youth are considered ‘at risk’ to developing a gambling problem.”

What does this mean for teens living in other states across the nation?

Many have looked at the statistics of accessibility when it comes to gambling access, and if the numbers are correct, easy access to gambling brings the percentages up. This should cause parents some concern, especially when one considers the accessibility of internet gaming.

These ideas should help you.

You’re addicted. You know it, and so do those who love and care about you. You want to get help but where and by whom?

These ideas should help:

  • Learn what other gamblers have done to reign in their desire to gamble. From personal blogs to informative websites, find out what you can do to get help. 
  • Talk to your pastor or other religious leader. He/she will have great ideas to help you through the healing process and provide experts for you to see.
  • Find out what you can online from experts in the field. Take their suggestions to heart and makes the steps necessary for recovery.
  • Check online or in your phone book for listings of gambling agencies that can help. Gamblers Anonymous offers 20 questions to ask yourself when you believe you have a gambling problem.
  • Talk to a relative or good friend about your problem. See if they will help you to take the first few steps to recovery. Having someone to talk to about your illness will help you to move forward.
  • Find a new hobby that begins to fill in the gaps of gambling. Perhaps you enjoy horseback riding, golfing, or baseball. Surround yourself with the new hobby and get others involved who know what you are trying to do to change your life.

Know the Laws of Gambling

What is your state law in regards to gambling? What are your options online? What you know will help you to make correct choices in gambling–no matter where you travel.

What should you be aware of?

  • State laws. Do you know, for example, if social gambling is allowed in the state, meaning “whether playing for money in a purely social context is allowed”? What this means is that the host of the game cannot make more money than you do; they must make equal to what you make. See more laws requirements by state here.
  • Online gambling or gaming. Online gambling is all the rage, but does the state allow you to make money at it? Sites range from gambling games to online craps, even informational gambling sites. Do you know what is really open to you?
  • Books from the library, online or through a medium such as Kindle, can give you information on the latest laws in your state.
  • What is the state’s charitable gaming laws? California has three statues that apply to charitable gaming; raffles, poker, and bingo. Utah is not on the list.
  • US Federal Gambling Laws. What do you know of the US Federal Gambling Laws? What you know and should be cautious about, even nationally, will help you at the poker table.

Knowing the gambling laws is really a protection for you. Make no mistake, not knowing the laws in your state may award you greater problems then you need. Learn what you can today regarding the laws of gambling and their consequences so that you’ll be prepared at any table in any state.
